4/11/68After meeting with a group of about 25 parents, School Committee Chairman John Canavan said that there will be a public hearing on the controversy surrounding the most recent edition of the Winthrop High School student literary magazine, The Purple Antelope, which made fun of the Green Berets, among others. Local veterans are upset that the high school allowed such an article to be printed. |
5/1/68Joe McDermott pitched a shutout to lead the WHS baseball team to a 5-0 win over Danvers. Paul Howard was the winning Hurler in a 4-1 win over Marblehead |
5/8/68The 8-2 WHS baseball team, one game behind NCE leader Woburn, had a eight run 4th inning over Newburyport. Coach Evans's squad received strong pitching efforts in two other games from Paul Howard and Joe McDermott. |
5/23/68Paul Howard and Rick Brugman combined for a stellar pitching effort in a 2-1 win over Swampscott. Howard then hurled 12 innings of five hit ball in a 3-1 triumph over Gloucester. |

The 270 members of the WHS class of 1968 received their diplomas Sunday at Miller Field. The ceremonies were saddended by the recent assassination of US Senator and presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, for whom President Lyndon B. Johnson declared a national day of mourning for Sunday. |
